After writing my last post I had to give myself a scolding. I hadn’t been out to my son’s new game bird pen in my backyard since it was built. There are a half dozen pheasants, three chukar, and 17 bobwhite quail in there now. Part of me was afraid DSC_0165that I would get attached to the birds and begin to enjoy their company, and another part of me figured there would probably be work involved if I went.

Well, I was right. (But isn’t it GOOD to be right every once in a while??)

It felt good to take the birds the gift of fresh water and to sit with them a while and listen to their chatter. Caring for God’s creatures — whether they be human or covered in fur or feathers — is one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves.
